Wigtownshire 9 Paisley 14 PDF Print E-mail

Paisley Rugby, sponsored by Kilty Kilty, were delighted to come away from arguably the toughest fixture in the league having secured 4 valuable league points for a Victory. It's a difficult trip down to Stranrear, where Wigtownshire RFC have a formidable reputation for fielding a powerful forward pack.

It was to the Paisley Coaches great delight that number 8 David Dodd was able to rearrange his working shifts and add his experience and power to the Paisley pack facing a tough day at the office. The colleague who filled in for David last Saturday can be assured of a pint any time they visit Anchor, as the presence and all round willingness to have a go that Doddsy brings to the team made this victory possible.

Playing into a stiff breeze in the 1st half, Paisley belligerently kept the home side down to a 9-0 half time lead, conceding 3 penalties and no tries, enduring a 10 minute onslaught from the hard running Wigtonwshire team at the end of the half. This first half was possibly the Paisley backs best performance of the season, with a watertight defense and occasionally devastating running to return the deep kicks that the Wigtownshire stand-off was peppering down. Of course the Paisley pack, as always gave the opposition a torrid time with some powerful driving plays, but as always lacking control and composure when in the scoring zone.

In the 2nd Half, the home team realised that they had perhaps not quite done enough with the conditions, to ensure victory, but they raised their game admirably, ensuring that Paisley were unable to win any decent quick ball to put their backs to better use. Fortunately for Paisley, the quick thinking and footballing abilities of David Dodds and Michael Sommerville were able to twice create space for backs Rosando Swanepol and Jon Murrel, to score the decisive tries, both converted by Steve Jermey.

The two tries came from opposite ends of the rugby spectrum, as Rusty, when given the ball in space showed pure pace and effortless balanced running to carve his way clean through the holes in the home defense. A try of great beauty, whilst on the other side of the pitch, Jon Murrel was given the ball 15 metres out with only a defender on the line, rather than risk a change of direction, he simply bulldozed right over the top of the last man to score a try of limited subtlety, but of great significance, as it put Paisley in front for the first time in the match.
